  THE USES OF ARTICLES A, THE AND AN.

Articles  are worlds which are normally placed behind common nouns, adjective + common nouns and numbers +common nouns.

THERE ARE TWO TYPES OF ARTICLES

1.    Definite articles

2.    Indefinite articles

1.DEFINITE ARTICLES

Are article which used to refer a particular person or thing. This article is used to indicate unique nouns, referring whole class of animal, the public bodies, organization, ships, before certain expression of time, before superlative and for things mentioned for second time.  For example

-The Sun is shining during the day.

-The Elephant is the biggest animal to date.

-The wall was broken in our lacture room.

-I found a car beside the ucc, the car was too old. ( car is mentioned at second time).

-I ate in a Chinese reustaurant. The reustaurantwas very good.

-I was given an assgiment on the previous day.

Futher more, article (the) is not used in:

-things in general. E.g. ( I like the Russian tea). or

-speaking about meals, transport and places. E.g. ( the university, the Dodoma, the rice, the station, the kilimanjaro  and e.t.c.)

but incase of here we can use (the) if there is noun within.  Forexample.

(a) The university of dar-es-salaam .(b) the police station.(c) the Dodoma region. (c) the mount Kilimanjaro.

2.IDIFINITE ARTICLES  

Article (A)   does not refer to any particular person or thing and often used with consonant sound A-Z   but vowels sound are excluded

(a)A nation party ( which one ?) (b) a lacture room.(which room?)

(c)  a man in aotside. (who?) .

                         Article (an)

we use this article when noun is starting with vowel sound (a,e,i,o,u)

for example. An ant, an iron, an apple, an old man, an angel.

But the following are some exceptions an is used instead of article (a).

An hour, an honorable, an honest man, an honorary. And etc .
